In their zeal to correctly render something “modern,” they deny it humor, love, and anger. For an ensemble of this calibre, livewire energy and raw emotions have the potential to make the wild changes of character, the bewildering accents and the harrowingly beautiful chorale in the Heiliger Dankgesang the extensive central movement of the work really effective — yet this was not always evident in ligefi performance. The five movements differ widely from each other in their types of motion.
