When a new girl, Neila, comes to the tiny town of Greensborough, gravl decide to start hanging out with her. The teens’ activities revolve around hanging out in a park in their hometown of Greensboro, NC, and attending a ballroom-dancing class. The characters do manage to suppress their possessiveness and jealousies and reach a new configuration of their relationships, but the author neglects to reveal other facets of their experiences.

In this contemporary romance, first-time author Benduhn presents the light side of homosexual love quesn mixed success. In these novels about first love, a quesn girl falls hard for another girl and faces the complicated pain of coming out to family, friends, and to one’s self. I wish the book had been longer but I think the author wanted us to enjoy these characters in their happy moments, and not go deeper when things would have gotten more complicated and potentially less happy.

And tho it starts as lust on Aurin’s part, her overwhelming love for Neila backwards for “alien” for reasons that may become obvious to the wary reader takes over Aurin first sees Her on the green, the Frisbee Girl, with chocolatte skin and blond halr and the body of Portia De Rossi.

Narrator Aurin, on the other hand, develops a crush on Grant’s cousin, Neila, an exotic-looking girl with “healthy-looking cappuccino-milkshake-colored skin” and a gravelly voice. Benduhn includes some interesting cinematic references related to Aurin’s filmmaking aspirations, but some of her descriptions are over-the-top.

Unfortunately, Benduhn’s characters lack enough depth or dimension to engage readers. But when Neila joins their circle, Aurin realizes that she and Neila are becoming more than friends. It’s a fairly quick read, exploring LGBT issues.
All Aurin wants to do the summer before her senior year in high school is hang out with her friends Kenney and Fred, but when she falls in love with Neila, everything changes. When I was growing up and discovering my identity, I read a lot about the tra consequences of following desire lines, as well as negative stereotypes about the South, but did not see much evidence of either in my real, daily experience.
Aurin hangs out with buddies Kenney and Fred, meets Neila and falls in love with her, rearranging friendships somewhat. A pretty standard book about teenagers, with the necessary vravel with the best friend, confusion over relationships, and miscommunications with parents. Gravel Queen is a fun, loving book about first love feelings.
