Margin notes are provided to for better context, highlighting issues of particular importance. Develop the ability to think abstractly as you study the ideas of logic and proof. Features, definitions, theorems, and exercise types are clearly marked and easily navigable, making the text a reference that you will refer to in your later courses.

With concrete and easy-to-conceptualize examples, you comprehend basic mathematical reasoning, and construct sound mathematical arguments. Epp received her Ph. After initial research in commutative algebra, she became interested in cognitive issues associated with teaching analytical thinking and proof and published a number of articles related to this topic, one of which was chosen for inclusion in The Best Writing on Mathematics She has spoken widely on discrete mathematics and organized sessions at national meetings on discrete mathematics instruction.

Discrete Mathematics with Applications: Susanna S. Epp: : Books

Renowned for her lucid, accessible prose, Epp explains complex, abstract concepts with clarity and precision. This book presents not only the major themes of discrete mathematics, aplications also the matehmatics that underlies mathematical thought. Students develop the ability to think abstractly as they study the ideas of logic and proof.

While learning about such concepts as logic circuits and mtahematics addition, algorithm analysis, recursive thinking, computability, sith, cryptography, and combinatorics, students discover that the ideas of discrete mathematics underlie and are essential to the science and technology of the computer age. Overall, Epp’s emphasis on reasoning provides students with a strong foundation for computer science and upper-level mathematics courses.

I’m amazed by other reviewers who say this book is clear or easy to understand.

Most concepts in this book are presented in discrrte gibberish when in many cases simple explanations would do and can be found in other books and other resources. The print is light and some text to The black and white print quality is not good. The print is light and some text to a point is not really dark enough to read clearly. This textbook was just about perfect for me. It is written in a clear manner. It includes a ton of examples, exercises and knowledge checks. Applicatons covers topics thoroughly and rigorously. I really enjoyed my discrete math class thanks to this textbook. It’s definitely something I plan to keep around for my future algorithms classes. For a book that costs dollars new I expect there to be no errors and really good student help. This book had mediocre student help, with very few problems solved in the back as a method of discret.

If I am going to buy a book which costs more than 2 Monitors, it better be mathematically checked and spell checked. There were so many math errors in the book that the previous renter of my book, a math professor, had taken the time to find them all for himself, and boy did he find a LOT!

I’m very disappointed with this book, and want a refund. I really like this book.

The only math book that I can say that for. Easy to follow, especially if you have seen discrete math before. Like all math booksthere are some parts they go way too fast through or don’t explain well, but this is better than most IMO.

If you need this book for class look for an international edition copy. Despite what all the disceete say the content is exactly the same. The only difference between the books is the cover is different and the text in the international edition is printed in black and white. The warning on the cover saying the book is prohibited to be used in the US is BS that the supreme court already shot down years ago.

As far as the book its self, its printed well and seems durable enough for a softcover book, but I can’t comment on the content as I haven’t started the class yet. This is one of the best math textbooks I’ve ever had. The explanations are straightforward, and even the difficult concepts can be understood if you take the disrcete to read over a section a few times. It also does a great job of highlighting the really important parts of each chapter.

Sometimes the definitions are hard to keep track of because they use terms that were defined just a page ago, but that’s not uncommon with math textbooks, and it’s not hard to flip back and forth.

The examples are useful and the explanations are good. A lot of the examples relate to computer science, which is useful because this course is required for computer science and electrical and computer engineers at my college.

It makes it clear why the concepts in the book relate to the majors, and I think it makes it more interesting because the concepts seem more practical.

The practice problems are also helpful and interesting, but I would like to have more problems that wtih similar to each other. This might seem odd, but I think it would be useful because I often find that when there are only one or two similar practice problems, by the time I look at the solutions and figure out how to do them, I don’t have another problem to practice.

However, this is a minor problem, and the book would be significantly longer if appliications problems were included. I recommend getting another book with more practice problems. This is one of my favorite textbooks! I got the hardcover and used it for class. I found it easy to use because the explanations are clean, concise, and the placement of everything is aesthetic.

These points are important to me in my textbooks so I can focus on the subject more clearly, so I was impressed. I won’t be bringing this one to the college book buyback; I’ll be keeping it!
