If you don’t know anything about the Cultural Revolution, it will give you a bare-bones outline in breathless text, but don’t view it as a definitive work.

I am from China, so my perspective is not looking at exotic culture, but trying to read for enjoyment. I rate this book one because it is tedious, the structure is plain chronically threading. When it come to the describe of herself, her life, I can’t help but feel the self-promotion self-boasting. I like to read good fiction, or good biography, what is this? It recites in detail of her grandmother a I am from China, so my perspective is not looking at exotic culture, but trying to read for enjoyment.

It recites in detail of her grandmother and mother’s lives, but when it come to herself, there was hardly any deep thinking or for us to see how the person developed.

I can only class salvajees as a caricature of Chinese women for the entertainment of westerners. Ok I got it, she hates Chairman Mao because she blamed him for her father’s downfall and subsequently her own salvaje from a Princess surrounded by servants and admirers to a “black kid”.

There are plenty in China suffered in the hands of these ruthless bureaucrats, lots of them died. I couldn’t finish the book. And there are only few books I haven’t manage to finish. Because it lacks something very important – a spark! I love books who can capture my attention the moment I open the first page and keep me interested salvajez the end. This one is not one of them. It took me a lot of patience and willpower to keep going to the moment I couldn’t do it anymore.

I have to agree with some of the comments that the writing is “dry”. Yes, it is dry and boring, and chaotic except for I couldn’t finish the book.

Yes, it is dry and boring, and chaotic except for the first part – the story of Chang’s grandmother. I don’t think sxlvajes this book should be regarded as a representation of a historical period, more likely as a fiction with chzng biographical element. It is hardly a serious historic book, which can describe chajg period objectively.

Because this period is the contradiction itself. I noticed that there are elements of reversed propaganda at the beginning of this book and that was the first thing, which put me off a little bit. The author describes her life in China as a hardship; and then again when she goes to UK, everything changes for the better.

I don’t pretend to know what was it during the Cultural revolution or before that. The fact is that she went to study in Europe. The chance to do so speaks for itself. Honestly, I regret buying this book! This is the story of three generations of Chinese women in the 20th century.

Ah, the makings of a great novel. Alas, her story is cuang the short shrift. Mostly, our story focuses on the author and her mother. With them, we learn all about Mao and the Cultural Revolution. A lot abo Wow!

A lot about Mao. I am not surprised that this book has been banned in China. More than anything else, it is an anti-Mao book. Now that you know that, you can probably understand why I was not thrilled with this book.

It took the entire month of August to get through this one. My apologies to the 2 very intelligent women who said this is the best book ever. This was as dull as the grey or blue uniforms the communists wore throughout the book. It was a chronology of misery and submission.

China’s modern history is filled with repression and repetitive agony. So was the book. I skipped the middle pages hoping for something other then misery No wonder there was no unemployment – everyone was a spy, a prison guard or in charge of reeducation meetings. I cannot recommend this book to anyone unless you are a real student of Chinese history. Stopped on page Read for book club. I really try hard to read any book suggested by the ladies of my club!

This was such a slog fest though, I couldn’t finish it. Too much history and all written like a history text. I want the story, salvajess me there with the women and the emotions. While the details did tug my heartstrings like the woman sold as a concubine who had to fear the servants it was so depressing that I didn’t see the point in having to read all the extra unnecessary dates and facts Stopped on page While the details did tug my heartstrings like the woman sold as a concubine who had to fear the servants it was so depressing that I didn’t chag the point in having to read all the extra unnecessary dates and facts just to be salvzjes

Cisnes Salvajes

In actuality, the narrative focused more on the formation of the Communist Party, the Cultural Revolution, and salvajrs brutality of the Mao Zedong regime.

The most interesting character in the book is the grandmother. The last generation of Chinese women to have their feet chng, she displays dignity, gentleness, and cisnse through all the adversities of the time.

The book was too long It was like utter torture to read. To have any clue of what was happening, you needed to keep a running family tree of an extremely complex family going, just to keep track of names. The descriptions and overall feel of the book were very cold and emotionless, resulting in myself really not caring for the characters or the outcome of the book. Wasn’t able to finish this book. No me ha gustado Cisnes Salvajes. I couldn’t get passed half way. Yes it is very informative and the facts and lifestyles that are explained are very important and we should we aware of this history but it is just so dull.

I was skipping pages, my mind was wandering mid sentence and eventually I just couldn’t take anymore. Too many ‘characters’ real people to keep up with and too many sections of boring history with no story to liven it up. I feel like such a loser. I just couldn’t read this book. I find the subject material so facinating, but couldn’t stand all salvaejs violence.
